David Barnes – The Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal Building on Heritage.
Tue 11 th Mar 2025

David is one of the trustees of the canal group and first moved to the north of England in 1989 in search of the northern landscapes. He is a great fan of the 1960s films that were shot in the north such as ‘A Taste of Honey’ and ‘Spring and Port Wine’ some scenes being filmed along the canal.
The Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal ran from Salford to Prestolee, where one branch ran to Bolton and another to Bury. The 15 miles of canal had 17 locks.
It is connected to the River Irwell in Manchester.

Mount Sion Steam Crane

A massive breach of the canal in 1936 led to the canal's eventual closure and it is thought the main cause was a fault line in the geology.
Restoration is continuing along several sections of the canal and some remnants of the working days remain such as the Mount Sion Steam Crane that was used to unload coal from nearby collieries. A more recent addition in 2012 was the replacement of a bridge with the Meccano Bridge at Prestolee Locks, Little Lever. It was designed by artist Liam Curtin and is made from ‘scaled up’ pieces of Meccano.
